Abstract

This study examined the effect of using BBC Learning English - Real Easy English podcasts on EFL students' listening skills and contextual vocabulary mastery at SMAS Islam Diponegoro. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was employed involving 72 eleventh-grade students (experimental group n=36, control group n=36). Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank tests. The experimental group showed significant improvements in listening skills (Z=-3.499, p<.001) and contextual vocabulary mastery (Z=-4.257, p<.001) with medium to large effect sizes (r=0.41 and r=0.50). Between-group comparisons confirmed significant differences favoring the experimental group for both variables (p=.006 and p=.011). These findings suggest that podcast-based instruction may enhance EFL students' listening and vocabulary skills within the context of this study. However, due to the use of intact classes and differences in speaker configuration, accent, speech rate, and discourse format between conditions, causal claims should be interpreted with caution.
