Abstract
This research aims to find out how the teacher teaches writing narrative text using short stories at SMA Negeri 1 Bangsal. It also aims to find out the functions and benefits of using short stories in writing class. The approach used in this research is a descriptive qualitative research. The research subject as a source of data was a teacher at SMAN 1 Bangsal and a Teacher's Handbook. In this research, researcher will use purposive sampling because researcher prefers informants who are considered to know how the teaching process works, so that it can provide reliable information to be a valid data source. The instrument used was interview, to find out how the teacher teaches narrative texts using short stories to students. The results showed that with a teacher who was pleasant when delivering material, students would also be motivated. By watching YouTube or reading lots of stories, students can arrange ideas in their minds well. They can arrange it with regard to the generic structure of narrative texts and in chronological order. By providing some grammar exercises related to text, students can have a better understanding of the simple past tense concept.
