Abstract

ABSTRACT Pinkan Tan Islami, 51706140014. Teacher’s Communication Strategy and Students’ Motivation in Online Learning. Thesis in English Department. Majapahit Islamic University. Advisor: (I) Wiwiwk Mardiana, S.Pd., M.Hum., (II) Amy Krisdiana S.Pd., M.Hum. Communication strategy is needed to be applied by teachers in online learning today. The positive influence that results from implementing communication strategy makes students' learning motivation increase, the interaction that exists between teacher-students in achieving learning success. Communication strategy using social media that is easily accessible by all young people will facilitate this online learning. This qualitative study aims to investigate teacher communication strategies using social media for online learning that will increase students' motivation to learn in the future as well as teacher communication strategy that have a positive influence on students' motivation to learn English. This study uses an interview with an English teacher, distributing questionnaires to class X IPA 1 students in data collection and documentation as evidence of online learning using social media. The results of this study indicate that the aspect of the communication strategy used by the teacher in online learning is using IGTV social media or called the Asynchronous learning mode. The type of motivation that is reflected in online learning by the students is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, but student motivation also arises from within each of them because of self-awareness to do something. This study suggests teachers to be creative and communicative in today's era by implementing media-based communication strategies that can be easily accessed by students in increasing their learning motivation, especially in an online context. This research underlines several things, namely increasing learning motivation, increasing interaction between teacher-students, increasing discipline, and improving student communication in learning.
