Abstract

In non-English speaking countries like Indonesia, developing English speaking skills can be challenging due to various reasons, such as fear of mistakes, low self-confidence, and communication issues. To address this, a researcher conducted a quantitative study using impromptu speech as a method to encourage students to speak more confidently in English and improve their oral communication skills. The study involved pre-tests, treatments (impromptu speech sessions), post-tests, and questionnaires. The results indicated that the impromptu speech method effectively enhanced students' English-speaking skills, including pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The research instrument's validity was ensured through SPSS 25 calculations based on 10 student questionnaires. Although the study has limitations and is not perfect, it provides valuable information and references for future research in improving English speaking skills, particularly through impromptu speech methods. English lecturers are encouraged to adopt this method in their teaching to improve students’ speaking abilities. The research emphasizes the importance of continuous improvement and welcomes constructive criticism and suggestions for enhancement. In summary, this study highlights the potential benefits of using impromptu speech to boost students' confidence and effectiveness in English speaking. English educators can use this research as a resource to enhance their teaching methods and help students become better English speakers.
