Abstract

In teaching English, reading comprehension cannot be separated in vocabulary knowledge because both of them related to each other. If the students master vocabulary, they will be easy to comprehend about reading text and they will know what reading text is about. Teaching English for junior high school is not an easy task for English teachers. Jeopardy game is one of the strategies that can be used by English teachers to teach English especially, in reading and vocabulary. This research is intended to explore some theories and research findings about the successful of jeopardy game in teaching English, which in this case is to teach reading and vocabulary for junior high school students. The objectives of this research were; 1) to find out the use of jeopardy game to teach reading and vocabulary. 2) To find out the impacts of using jeopardy game to teaching reading comprehension. 3) To find out the pedagogical implications of the use of jeopardy game to teach English. This research used library research which the data were collected from various journals and books. The data include the statement and/or theories suggested by the specialist particularly all theories related to jeopardy game. The researcher used documentation by review from several sources of data obtained. The data analysis of this research used content analysis through three stages namely; data condensation, data display and drawing conclusion/verification. The result of this research showed that 1). The implementation of jeopardy game to teach reading and vocabulary itself, it depends on the teacher’s creativity and innovation in implementing the jeopardy game. It can modify depends on learning objectives to be achieved. This game was implemented into cooperative learning and students of each team must get the highest score in each category if they want to be the winner.2) jeopardy game to teaching reading can encourage and enhance team work, provide an element of fun by actively involving students, provide competition that can motivate students, can be excellent introduction activities or good reviews, provide variety in classroom and increase students’ achievement.3) The use of jeopardy game needs to be applied continuously in teaching English. It is because the use of jeopardy game can be effective way and good solution to help the students in learning English and create an enthusiastic learning process so that the standard of competence of learning process can be achieved. Here, the researcher also suggested the design of modified jeopardy game. Hopefully, the English teachers or researches in future can use it as a reference to teach English.
