Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze moral values towards nature found in English textbooks for senior high school students in Indonesia, using Martin and White's Language Appraisal approach and Biocentrism Theory by Paul W. Taylor's. The background of this research is based on the increasing urgency of global environmental issues such as global warming, pollution, and loss of biodiversity, which require character education focused on ecological awareness from an early age. This study employs a qualitative method with discourse analysis techniques, analyzing quotations in textbooks related to environmental issues. The primary focus of the analysis is directed at three subsystems within Appraisal Theory Attitude (Affect, Judgment,Appreciation), Engagement, and Graduation to examine how language is used in constructing moral attitudes toward nature. The results of the study show that textbooks convey values such as Respect for Nature, Justice for Living Beings, Sustainability, Non-Maleficence, and Moral Responsibility through the use of strong evaluative language, especially in the Judgment and Appreciation categories. However, it was also found that some important values such as Biotic Egalitarianism were absent, indicating that textbooks still tend to place humans at the center and have not fully reflected biocentric ethics. This research is expected to provide input for teachers, textbook authors, and policymakers in developing teaching materials that not only teach language skills but also instill a deeper and more sustainable awareness and moral responsibility toward the environment.
