Abstract

Digital media consumption has given rise to a phenomenon known as parasocial attachment to anime characters (waifu and husbando). This study aims to analyze the nature of parasocial attachment among anime fans (weeaboos) regarding these fictional characters in Bogempinggir Village, Sidoarjo. The sociological focus lies on the family dynamics, social history, and environmental factors contributing to this phenomenon.A qualitative case study approach was employed. Purposive sampling identified three young adult informants who identified as having a waifu or husbando. Data collection involved passive participant observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews. Data analysis followed the models of Miles, Huberman, and Creswell, encompassing transcription, coding, and drawing conclusions.The findings reveal that the informants' parasocial attachments were triggered by factors such as interpersonal crises or family conflicts. Indicators such as "feeling addressed" and "automatic mind reading" dominated the Parasocial Interaction dimension, creating the impression of reciprocal interaction during media consumption. Regarding the Parasocial Relationship dimension, the attachment was analyzed over the long term based on physical attributes and personality traits. Adaptive characteristics included coping mechanisms and emotional regulation. However, extremely high levels of attachment impacted time management and led to reduced social participation in the real world.
