Abstract

This quantitative research examined the progress of English speaking skills among seventh-grade students at MTs Sunan Ampel Jatirejo, Mojokerto, after experiencing Self-Regulated Learning-Based Instruction. Utilizing a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, the study involved eight participants (\(n = 8\)) selected through a purposive sampling approach. The educational intervention was executed over four sessions, integrating a Target Score Matrix, an SRL Focus Monitoring Sheet, and a Self-Reflective Log. An oral monologue test evaluated speaking competence across five criteria: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The empirical findings demonstrated that the average speaking score significantly advanced by 4.50 points, rising from a pre-test mean of 15.38 to a post-test mean of 19.88. Statistically, the paired-samples t-test confirmed a highly significant variance between the testing phases, (t (7) = -11.906), (p < .001). The calculated Cohen's (d_{z}) of 4.21 indicated an exceptionally substantial within-group standardized effect. Nonetheless, given the small sample size and the absence of a control group, these insights remain restricted to the specific variations observed within the monitored cohort.
