Abstract

Vocabulary is an important aspect in learning English. The more vocabulary students have, the easier it is to communicate using English. However, students' vocabulary is relatively weak when learning at school. For this reason, one of the media that can help increase students' vocabulary is the use of movies. This study aims to (1) determine the application of the use of movie media in teaching English vocabulary based on a literature review and (2) determine the development of students' vocabulary by using movie media based on a literature review. To obtain the required data, this research uses a literature study. Researchers use documents as a data source. There are eight documents used by researchers, namely journals, articles, and theses. In analyzing the data, the researcher used content analysis. Data were collected by reviewing research related to English vocabulary and movie media. Research findings indicate that the application of movie media can be done using individual activities or group activities. The steps in using movie can also be modified depending on the student's situation and class conditions, as well as the learning objectives to be achieved. In addition, the use of movie makes students' vocabulary mastery develop significantly. This is evidenced by the results of research conducted by other researchers from 2015 to 2020 which showed that students' vocabulary development can be improved by learning using movie. This means that movie can be an effective way to teach vocabulary to students. In addition to acquiring and adding English vocabulary, it can also make the learning process fun so that learning objectives can be achieved. This research is expected to contribute to the field of education, especially in English education.
